As we continue to spend the majority of our time at home during the pandemic, creating a peaceful and inspiring home has never been more important.

The arrival of the new year brings the perfect opportunity to incorporate fresh styles and new trends into our living spaces—which is why we’re so excited to share our favourite kitchen design trends for 2021!

Let’s start with a trend that will be as popular this year as it was last year: natural materials.

In the spirit of wabi-sabi—a Japanese philosophy aiming to find beauty in imperfection—we want to create authentic spaces that will age gracefully, all the while appreciating the stages that lead an object to transform (for example, you might think of the ageing process of walnut or the patina that forms naturally on copper).

To integrate this trend into your kitchen, opt for wood veneer or earth-toned polyurethane lacquer. To decorate your space, choose materials like stone, lime, concrete, natural fibres and plants. To complete the look, add a textured tile backsplash, cane counter stools and a few lamps featuring organic shapes.

Composed of natural materials with organic or geometric shapes, nature-inspired handles fit perfectly with the previous trend. They are a great choice for anyone thinking of adding wood cabinets or neutral-toned lacquer cabinets to their kitchen.

Integrated handles are also a great way to add a unique touch to your kitchen cabinets. We love pairing oak cabinets with integrated metal handles or wood cabinets with tone-on-tone handles. However, this trend can easily be adapted to your favourite styles, colours and materials.

Playing with the positioning and height of cabinet hardware will also be big in 2021. Our team is particularly inspired by classic Parisian doors, which feature higher handles than the ones that are typically installed here in Quebec. Why not try something different by installing higher handles on your pantry or built-in refrigerator?

Hidden Kitchens

2021 will be the year of classic interior design, with the emergence of European-style “hidden” kitchens. We were inspired to explore this trend after one of our clients approached us with the idea of concealing her kitchen cabinets while recreating the style of classic Parisian kitchens.

In addition to making the kitchen look and feel bigger, “hidden” cabinets create a harmonious transition between the kitchen and the other rooms. And it goes without saying that this type of kitchen looks like a work of art!

Bold counters will be popular this year, with bold vein patterns, surprising colours, and unexpected pairings. To recreate the look, opt for a backsplash and island that stand out from the rest of your kitchen. For an even more spectacular effect, cover all sides of your island with the marble or quartz of your choice.

From pastels to bright colours, many kitchen and bathroom faucets are now available in a variety of surprising colours. While stainless steel and solid brass are still great options for those looking for a more classic faucet, coloured faucets are a great way to add a pop of colour to a neutral room.

In the bathroom, colourful faucets and showerheads pair well with concrete, neutral colours, and organic textures. To integrate this trend into the bathroom in a more subtle way, pair colourful plumbing with an open vanity or a wall-mounted sink, or opt for a brightly coloured soap dispenser or towel rack.
