DESIGN TREND WE LOVE: WOOD SLATS

Horizontal, vertical, pale, dark, narrow or wide, wooden slats are the perfect way to add a unique touch to any space. Inspired by projects created by our designers as well as designers and architects from around the world, we have created a list of 7 inspiring ways to adopt this trend in your home—no matter the room.

In the kitchen

This project specially designed for our Montreal showroom shows that it is possible to create a dynamic and lively design with a neutral colour palette. “This monochrome kitchen was created using a mix of different materials, including marble, wood (black stained oak and walnut), as well as slats of different dimensions on the backsplash and on the cabinet doors,” explains Brigitte Boulanger, cofounder of Cuisines Steam. “Slats are also a great way to put an end to classic one-dimensional Italian kitchens by intensifying volume and depth,” adds Brigitte.

Islands

This island with walnut slats is without a doubt the statement piece of this kitchen. While this space contains contemporary elements and materials (including white and pale grey polyurethane lacquer cabinets as well as a grey quartz backsplash), the walnut island fits perfectly with the traditional charm of this home—an old Montreal house composed of elegant stained glass doors and classic wooden mouldings, and decorated with vintage furniture and a multitude of travel souvenirs.

For this project, white oak slats were installed on large wooden panels to create a bold delimitation between the kitchen and the corridor. The slats therefore serve as a fluid transition between the kitchen and the living room while blending perfectly with the industrial elements of the space, such as exposed pipes and concrete walls and ceilings.

Other rooms

Although slats are a perfect match for the kitchen, they can also be used outdoors, along stairways, on ceilings, and in virtually any room in the house. Be creative: combine slats of different widths or place them at an angle for a multidimensional effect. “There is no need to put them everywhere: adding slats on one wall or on a kitchen island is enough to completely transform a room,” adds Brigitte.

Want to integrate this trend into your home less permanently? Furniture made of wood slats, like buffets and coffee tables, will allow you to transform a room easily while adapting to several decorating styles.

Add a dash of “je ne sais quoi” to your home by installing wood slats on the exterior walls of your house or using them in the yard as an awning.

Walls and ceilings

Wood slats installed on the walls and ceiling create a sense of grandeur in this unique Toronto restaurant. Wall lights complete the look by adding even more dimension and texture to the wood.

Incorporating slats on a small section of a wall—for example, behind the television in the living room—makes it possible to adopt this trend on a small budget. In the bedroom, we especially like wood slat accent walls paired with ceiling lights. This combination enhances the texture of the wood by creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Darker wood slats are ideal for giving a modern and mysterious effect to a room. Recreate the style of this elegant Parisian bathroom by opting for neutral countertops and a few touches of dark metal.
